During Year One, students gain an understanding of the design process, and are introduced to basic manual skills, computer software and communication techniques used in graphic design. Through challenging, hands-on projects, students explore their individual creativity in problem solving, layout, color theory, typography, basic illustration and photography. Using state-of-the-art, industry standard computer software, they develop the technical accuracy required for the production of print and website designs. Workplace management and “real life” skills that are key to success in this exciting, fast-paced industry are emphasized throughout the year.
In Year Two, students hone their skills through a series of customized projects as they specialize in a medium of interest (print or electronic). In addition, students have the opportunity to experiment with software used in the immensely popular interactive area of graphic design and video games. Demonstrating their participation in the program, students produce portfolios of their work at the end of the year. Field trips are taken to see topical exhibits and events in New York City, the center of the American Graphic Design Industry.
