Diversified Health Occupations I - Coser 101.140
Diversified Health Occupations provides an opportunity to pursue health
careers and/or certified nursing assistant training. The program acquaints
high school students with a variety of health occupations including geriatrics,
emergency services, home health care, physical therapy, pharmacy, central
supply, veterinary sciences, dental assisting, radiology technology, and
acute care experiences. Basic entry-level skills and understanding are
developed in specific health occupations. This course utilizes classroom
instruction and clinical experiences* to
educate the student on the following topics:
- Functions and educational requirements of various health care team
members
- Specific job skills common to patient care
- Knowledge of the human body
- Personal development
- Basic nutrition
- Basic observational and communication skills
Health Occupations I provides students the opportunity to obtain CPR/AED
and First Aid Certification. Upon recommendation, students successfully
completing the certified nurse assistant training in theory, clinical,
and skill
competencies may be eligible to take the New York State Nurse Aide Certification
exam (6th grade reading level is recommended). In addition, this certification
provides the student with a solid foundation to pursue
further education in a medical/nursing career.
* A satisfactory physical evaluation by a licensed medical
practitioner is required.
Diversified Health Occupations II
Diversified Health Occupations II is designed to build on basic patient
skills acquired during the first level of the program. During the second
year of Diversified Health Occupations, basic entry level skills are developed
in
additional health occupations including human services habilitation/rehabilitation,
phlebotomy, EKG, medical assisting, veterinary assisting, dental assisting,
and pharmacy technology.
A Certified First Responder (CFR) course will be offered which will
provide students with an opportunity to obtain CFR certification and provide
a basis for pursuing Emergency Medical Technical (EMT) certification.
Diversified Health Occupations II provides students the opportunity for
advanced health career exploration through clinical internships in acute
care facilities, medical offices and clinics and human services. Upon
the successful completion of the Diversified Health Program, students
will have acquired a solid foundation, enabling them to pursue post secondary
education in Human Services.

Health Careers Academy
The Health Careers Academy Program located at the Liberty High School
is a total immersion experience in the field of health care. This half-day
program is open to carefully selected juniors throughout Sullivan County
who are interested in a medical career. Admission criteria include an
anticipated 80 or above average in Regents Living Environment and Math
A, as well as a cumulative average of B (85) or more in high school.
The Academy features integrated academic and technical instruction,
competency based internship, and an emphasis on team work and preparation
for post-secondary education in health and medical fields. Students
explore all career opportunities within health care facilities and the
hospital.

New Vision Program
The New Vision Program is an academically rigorous program for college
bound seniors who plan to major in pre-med, biology, pharmacy, nursing,
physical therapy, occupational therapy or other allied health fields.
It is an interdisciplinary immersion program based in the Liberty
High School. Students observe professionals in their work settings,
giving them an opportunity to explore a variety of professions in
health care, while integrating their academic knowledge with their
work experience. New Vision students participate in real life
experiences that promote critical thinking and problem solving skills.
Through the New Vision Program, seniors take Economics 12 Honors,
English 12 Honors, Anatomy and Physiology, and Government 12 Honors
by participating in Syracuse University’s Public Affairs 101
course, a three-credit college course.
Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) - Coser 101.150
The 18-month Licensed Practical Nursing Program is a 12th and 13th year
secondary extended program. It is designed to prepare students to enter
the Licensed Practical Nursing profession with the theories, competencies,
attitudes, and abilities to provide high quality, safe, and appropriate
care within various health care settings. The LPN Program is offered to
senior high school students or adult applicants.
Admission requirements include an 80 or above average in Regents Living
Environment and Math A, a completed application, two letters of reference,
completion of the entrance exam exam, and interview with the program supervisor.
Acceptance into the LPN Program will be determined by successful completion
of admission requirements and satisfactory performance on the entrance
exam. This program offers 1,188 hours of instruction including classroom
and clinical experiences in preparation for the National Council Licensure
Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN). Upon successful completion
of the LPN program and NCLEX-PN, students are eligible to continue their
nursing careers via the New York State LPN to RN articulation.
Prerequisite: Current
certification in Adult, Pediatric and Infant CPR (Health Care Provider)
Recommendation: Successful
completion of Diversified Health Occupations I with a grade of B or above
and teacher recommendation.
