Even Start Family Literacy Partnership
The Sullivan and Partners in Learning Even Start Family Literacy Partnerships
provide a comprehensive literacy education program for families with children
under the age of eight which is built upon existing community resources.
Even Start provides a center-based Early Childhood Education Program called
Little Learners for children ages 3 months through five years four days
per week at the St. John St. Education Center. Parents attend GED or ESL
classes while their children are in class. Enrolled family members participate
in adult education, early childhood education, and parenting education
components. Families are assisted to develop and meet
personal goals and become partners in the educational growth and development
of their children by Family Educators.
Sullivan Even Start is a partnership between BOCES and the Recovery Center,
in collaboration with local school districts, Head Start, Literacy Volunteers,
Sullivan County Community College, the Center for Workforce Development,
the Sullivan County Department of Family Services and others. Partners
in Learning Even Start, a partnership between Sullivan BOCES and the Sullivan
County Child Care Council, was funded in September of 2002 for a four-year
period with special emphasis on limited English speaking families, families
headed by teen parents, and families utilizing childcare services subsidized
by TANF (Temporary Assistance to Needy Families). Both Even Start programs
provide integrated home and center-based services with components of early
childhood education, adult education and parenting education. All services
are provided at no charge to families. A summer program for children ages
3-7 is held on the BOCES campus.
