Special Education Related Services are those services which enable classified
students to benefit from their special education programs. These services
include physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech and language services,
and intensive counseling as prescribed by Committees on Special Education
according to each child’s individual needs. Because of new state
requirements that began with the 1997-98 school year, related services
costs in special education have been separated from base tuitions (200
Cosers). Each related service has been assigned a separate COSER from
702-711.
Speech Services - Coser 702
Our speech and language therapists serve pupils with a wide range of communication
problems including articulation, language, fluency, and voice impairments.
Services include both group and individual sessions. Emphasis is on delivering
services in the least restrictive environment.
Counseling Services - Coser 703
Counseling Services affects linkage among the student, family, and community
agencies. In addition, the school social worker may provide counseling
services to individual students and groups as recommended by the Committee
on Special Education.
Physical Therapy - Coser 704
With approval from the Committee on Special Education and written parental
consent, an evaluation is completed by a New York State licensed Physical
Therapist who specializes in the development of gross motor skills. Results
are reported to the Committee on Special Education, along with specific
program recommendations. If direct treatment and/or consultation are recommended,
New York State law requires a physician’s prescription before services
can be implemented.
Occupational Therapy - Coser 705
An Occupational Therapist specializes in the development of fine motor
and visual perceptual motor skills and activities of daily living. Therapies
are developed by utilizing knowledge based on medical, biological, behavioral,
and therapeutic principles. The therapy goals are related directly to
the students’ individual educational goals as determined by their
IEP’s.
Teacher of Visually Impaired - Coser 706
A specially trained itinerant teacher provides support to students whose
visual impairment adversely affects education performance. The teacher
is available to provide evaluation and instruction or other types of support
relative to the particular needs of the student.
Teacher of the Hearing Impaired/Deaf -
Coser 707
This program serves children with medically diagnosed hearing problems.
Each pupil’s program is based upon the amount of his/her residual
hearing. Hearing-impaired pupils are encouraged to be as independent as
possible in the classroom and in the community.
Adaptive Physical Education - Coser 708
Students who have unique physical education needs that require one on
one services are candidates for this Coser.
One-on-One Aide - Coser 709
Students whose level of need requires one- on-one support to be successful
in their classroom are candidates for this coser. This service is at the
recommendation of the CSE Chairperson.
Nursing Services - Coser 710
Certified nursing staff is available to provide medication and other medical
support as indicated by the IEP.
Orientation and Mobility - Coser 711
A licensed Orientation and Mobility Instructor provides services to visually
impaired or blind students in the school and community setting. This is
a comprehensive and individualized service that enables the student to
become aware of elements and factors in his/her environment and to move
through that environment safely and independently.
